Proudly Supporting Toys for Tots in Northern Virginia
Published on December 17, 2013
The challenging economic climate is not only impacting businesses in the area, but also some of the most beloved charities. For example, Toys for Tots, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Program that distributes toys to less fortunate children during the holidays, has been hit hard by budget constraints this year.
When the Toys for Tots program in Northern Virginia announced it would not have the budget for trucks and enough volunteers to do box drop-offs and pick-ups for their annual holiday toy drive, we proudly stepped in to help. Every child deserves to have a Christmas, and Toys for Tots brings this vision to life each and every holiday season.
From December 11th to 18th, Thermopylae provided two trucks, manned by our volunteers, to do box pick-ups to 50+ locations in the Northern Virginia area and transport 7,000-10,000 new and unwrapped toy donations – an estimated value of over $100,000 – to the Toys for Tots warehouse location in Fredericksburg, VA.
In addition to this support, we are also offering our technical expertise in geospatial information management to map out and efficiently plan the routes and pick-ups using tools like Google Fusion Tables and Maps. Finally, we will be using Google’s Tour Builder to build a ‘tour’ of all of our stops, complete with descriptions and photos of the pickups/dropoffs.
We have named this overall initiative thermopylaeCARES Operation Toys For Tots, which is part of our larger thermopylaeCARES corporate social responsibility program that supports charities that are important to our employees.
Our work to support the Toys for Tots program provides a deep source of pride for us and we urge all of our readers to consider supporting this effort.
