Thermopylae Sciences + Technology – 4th Annual Cake & Beer Day Hackathon for Charity
Published on September 13, 2013
ARLINGTON, VA -
Thermopylae Sciences + Technology employee's celebrated in unique fashion today at the company's 4th annual Cake & Beer Day event which combined day long technology project team initiatives with donations to charities chosen by each team. Yes and also there is plenty of cake and some beer! But the day is really about technology innovation and giving back - The day goes like this. President AJ Clark hosts a Cake & Beer Day kickoff meeting at Thermopylae's Wilson Labs facility in Arlington Virginia at 10AM giving each team an opportunity to share the projects they will be working on throughout the day. Here are some examples of this year’s cool and innovative technology projects:
- Code a program using the Google Web Speech API to enable voice recognition support in Thermopylae's geospatial mapping software iSpatial.
- Build software that can allow a user to remotely control an ARDrone using Google Glass.
- Create a Ubiquity mobile app widget which can send information to a Pebble SmartWatch.
- Develop a web app that controls Phillips Hue light bulbs, indicating Jenkins status on builds and scrum burndown velocities.
- One team's project was to re-purpose a company refrigerator into a kegerator.
The charity element of the day was part of Thermopylae's corporate social responsibility initiative - thermopylaeCARES - which offers employee's "Cool And Really Engaging Service" opportunities to help those less fortunate in our community. At the end of day teams presented their projects to the company in person and via Google Hangout - each team ended their presentations with the charity they selected.
Mike Cachine, SVP of thermopylaeCARES said "Cake & Beer day is a lot of fun! It's about engaging employees to set aside a day to create and innovate with technology, but it's also about giving back. Every project team was asked to pick a charity that was important to them and in one day 14 different charities received donations from Thermopylae on behalf of the teams. It was really amazing."
