ARLINGTON, VA. MAY 1, 2014 - The annual MassMutual Citizenship awards, which are hosted by the Washington Business Journal, has recognized Thermopylae's partnership with the Marine Corps Toys For Tot's program as one of four finalists for the 2014 Corporate Philanthropist award.
When the Marine Corps needed help collecting toys, Thermopylae rented some trucks and launched "Operation Toys For Tot's" to manage the toy pickup logistics from over 70 business locations throughout Northern Virginia. Technology played a key role, the company used Google Apps to collect location information from each of the drop off points and then Google Maps for Business to visualize the data and plan the truck routes. Operation Toys for Tot's ultimately delivered over 15,000 toys to the Toys For Tot's warehouse in Fredricksburg VA, where they were then sorted and distributed to 1000's of children in time for the holidays.
"The partnership with the Marine Corps Toys For Tot's program was driven by our passion for helping children in need and accomplishing the impossible, said Michael Cachine, CIO, Thermopylae Sciences + Technology. "We were presented with the challenge of literally turning part of our business into Santa's workshop overnight! Then becoming toy collecting elves for 3 weeks to help out the Marines and 1000's of kids - How cool is that?"
The Washington Business Journal and MassMutual Citizenship Awards are designed to honor Washington DC's leading business and nonprofit partnerships that have made an impact for families and children in our local community.
